Edema – to fill with fluid; swell
Example: It’s advised that you rest a limb in an elevated position, if you have edema in it.
Acerbic – sharp or harsh; bitter
Example: Sandra is known for her acerbic wit.
Aphorism – a brief, succinct statement or observation
Example: The aphorism “Eat, drink, and be merry” is from pharaoh Imhotep.
Arcane – obscure or esoteric
Example: The boys wouldn’t let anyone enter the clubhouse without doing the arcane handshake they invented.
Dilatory – wasting time, or causing delay
Example: Jeff did dilatory things, such as read comic books, before getting to his chores.
Effulgent – glowing, or shining
Example: Neon lights’ effulgent beams decorated the busy Friday night in the city.
Ossified – to become bone-like; rigid
Example: The aquarium floor was decorated with ossified wood to give it a more natural look.
Lachrymose – weepy; to cause sorrow
Example: Terms of Endearment is a notoriously lachrymose movie.
Abnegation – denial; to refuse personal responsibility
Example: The politician was not reelected, due to his many abnegations when he was in office his first term.
Hoarfrost – the fuzzy frost that forms from dew
Example: Hoarfrost on leaves is always an enchanting sight on winter mornings.
Celerity – swift, or rapid
Example: When I realized that the store would close in one hour, I jumped in my car with celerity.
